Should Hindi Be Made Mandatory in Schools and Declared the Main Official Language of India?

There is renewed debate in India over whether Hindi should be made a mandatory subject in all schools and formally declared the main official language of the country. Supporters argue this would promote national unity, create a common Indian identity, and simplify governance by using a single Indian language.

However, critics — especially from non-Hindi-speaking regions — see this as the imposition of a majority language over others in a multilingual country. They argue that India’s strength lies in its linguistic diversity, and that making Hindi mandatory marginalizes regional languages.

Others suggest that if there must be a single common language, it should be English, which is already widely used in education, business, law, and technology — and also connects India to the global economy. What’s your view?
