Which side of the Israeli Palestinian conflict do you sympathize with more?

On 7 October 2023, Hamas and several other Palestinian militant groups launched coordinated armed incursions from the Gaza Strip into the Gaza envelope of southern Israel, the first invasion of Israeli territory since the 1948 Arab–Israeli War.

The attacks began early on 7 October with a barrage of at least 3,000 rockets launched against Israel and vehicle-transported and powered paraglider incursions into Israel. Hamas terrorists breached the Gaza–Israel barrier, attacking military bases and massacring civilians in 21 communities. In total the attackers killed 1,139 people: 695 Israeli civilians (including 36 children), 71 foreign nationals, and 373 members of the security forces. About 250 Israeli civilians and soldiers were taken as hostages to the Gaza Strip, including 30 children, with the stated goal to force Israel to exchange them for imprisoned Palestinians. Reports of rape, sexual assault and even the burning of an infant in the crib were reported. The BBC has seen and heard evidence of rape, sexual violence and mutilation of women during the 7 October Hamas attacks.

In response, Israel initiated extensive military operations in the Gaza Strip. Over the ensuing months, more than 48,200 Palestinians have been killed, over half of whom were women and children, and more than 111,600 have been injured. The conflict has led to the displacement of approximately 90% of Gaza's population and the destruction or damage of around 245,000 housing units.

As of February 2025, a fragile ceasefire is in place, and negotiations are ongoing for further exchanges of hostages and prisoners. The situation remains volatile, with significant humanitarian concerns and efforts toward reconstruction in Gaza.
